BRIEF

Graphic Communication is instrumental in establishing and reinforcing certain ideologies. For example, the ‘binary’ icons of a man standing with his legs apart, and a skirted women standing with her legs closed, are a radically reductive description of the complex vagaries of people’s identities. As with any super-power, the power of graphic design comes with responsibility. This project is different from a typical commercially orientated brief. It is about identifying problems, rather than solving them. It is about challenging presumptions, rather than affirming them. It is up to you to decide what the deliverables are for this project. These will depend upon the nature of your critical design research and the topic that you have identified.

RESPONSE

It’s hard to resist romanticising food. From takeaways and restaurants, to food related advertisements, it is often made out to be that unless food is made with premium equipment, high-quality ingredients, and in a clean, modern, atmospheric environment, with highly-skilled cooks, it simply can’t be good, enjoyed, or satisfy. Taking a spin on the current heavily sensorial style of food-related advertisements, La Gueule de Bois recontextualises such representations of food within the narrative of a hungover student’s kitchen. This illustrates that regardless of the slightly chaotic and unprofessional process and circumstances, the final, simple meal still successfully achieves the basic power of food: to satisfy.
